Currently my work is influenced by my love of deep and
bright colours, and memories of my homeland, Holland. When I am creating
my ceramic pieces I remember and visualise the distinctive architecture,
landscape and light of the Dutch countryside. Holland has a great deal
of unique architecture in private houses, office and industrial buildings,
both new and old, all set in the uniquely flat landscape and strong
but soft light of Holland, and I translate this in an abstract way to
my designs.
All of my work is hand built rather than thrown. This allows me greater
degrees of freedom with shape than would otherwise be possible with
thrown pieces, and the distinctive irregular shape of my work reflects
this. It also means that each object I produce is very individual as
it is almost impossible to make a second identical one.
The most recent of my pieces are circular shapes with vertical sides
decorated outside with strong colours and patterns to reflect elements
of traditional Dutch houses and architecture. Size varies from small
to large, and each piece is functional as well as interesting, because
I believe in mixing good design with functionality. Small pieces are
roughly equivalent to a small cup and large pieces are roughly equivalent
to a medium size bowl or plate.
