Barbara and Bill Hawkins welcomed members of CCGG to their pottery. We
had an excellent afternoon. Barbara talked us through her skillful decorating
techniques while working on one of their lovely jugs that Bill throws.
They are a well estabished and quite unique couple in ceramics in that
Bill throws and makes the pieces, while Barbara decorates. They work in
hand-thrown and decorated stoneware, using precious metal lustres. Design
and decoration is heavily influenced by their location overlooking the
harbour and out to sea. We were also able to see lovely hand-painted tiles
by their daughter Faye Hawkins.
Bill took us round his throwing area and kiln room. The kilns include
a new one for soda firing and we were able to see the first few pots out
from this kiln. The afternoon was rounded off with tea and some excellent
cakes and scones. Many thanks to Barbara and Bill for their warm hospitality.
